Dumplings Over Flowers

Beneath Abstract Art

Though abstract works have been around since the 19th century, and growing in popularity since the 20th century, there are many who still don’t get it or don’t want to get it. Abstract works are the expression of a visualized soul. They represent things that cannot be literally translated: a thought, feeling, movement, desire… In a time where the world has become more politically and financially divided, where the rights of marginalized peoples seems forever in debate, and providing basic equity and education to our children is at risk, art feels like a luxury— Making art, buying art, even spending time discussing art. But art is substance.

Substance is greater than style.
Give me sustenance over superficiality.
Give me comfort and shelter, food and clean water.
Give me healthcare, equality, representation, and social justice.

Leave the idyllic painted picture of thoughts and prayers, false promises, and manipulated monetized design for the next sorry sucker.

My belly is full and my body is clothed. I sit in a home with soft pillows and white linens. But my heart and mind long for meaning, understanding, and insight.

I long for truth beyond words and significance beyond science and the physical world. It is essential to my being and the substance that makes me whole.

Give me art.
Give me dumplings.
